Frequently Asked Questions
1. How old
do I have to be to apply to be a First Year Missionary?
FYMs are to be single adults between 18 and 24 years of age at the start of the
program.
2. What other
qualifications are necessary?
Besides the age guideline, successful applicants:
- must be at least 18 at the time of application.
- are committed Christians with a strong
and vibrant Christian walk.
- have some previous missions or ministry
experience.
- are serious about God’s leading
in their life.
- are committed to participating in the
work of building the Kingdom.
3. What’s
housing like?
This will depend on your location, but you will live with other
FYMs in AIM team housing (guys
and girls will have separate facilities). You will participate
in family life together, including meals, prayer and worship times,
and some social outings. See family life.
4. What locations
are available?
Programs are currently running in
Dominican Republic , England, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, and Swaziland. See locations for more information
on each.
5. Do I have
to commit to the whole year?
Yes. Our FYM ministry is for a full school year, September through May. If you only want to do a one semester trip, then check out our Real Life Missions Teams which go out in the Fall, Spring and Summer.
6. How much
does it cost?
The First Year Missionary program costs from $5,500 - $9,500 for the year, not including airfare;
check the individual locations for
specifics.
That includes your housing, meals, books and resource materials, one-on-one discipleship, ministry and internship set-up, even some family social outings… we even throw in a small weekly allowance for you. We are also available and eager to help you with any questions you may have about support-raising.
7. Why are
you offering this program?
We want committed followers of Jesus transitioning into adulthood
to have the opportunity to grow in their faith and calling through
discipleship and hands-on ministry. We want God to have people
fully willing and able to be at His full service, and we see a
failure in the church to invest deeply in others toward that end.
We’ve got a lot more to say about what we want for you…
check out the FYM objectives for
more.
8. What can
I expect to learn?
We focus on facilitating growth in understanding God, understanding
yourself, understanding others, the world, and ministry. For areas
of emphasis within those categories, see the FYM
deliverables.
9. Do you have
any references?
TONS! Check out some student evaluations
and the FYM testimonies to hear
it from the ones who’ve been there.
