Mexico Interior

  1. Are we required to have special forms for our vehicle in order to enter Mexico?
  2. Is there an entrance or exit tax for Mexico?
  3. Do we need a tourist visa?

1. Are we required to have special forms for our vehicle in order to enter Mexico?

Special forms are NOT required in Matamoros or Reynosa.

Special forms ARE required to enter the interior of Mexico.

If you are driving your own vehicle. You must have:

The border guards sometimes ask for the title, so you may want to have a copy of it with you. They do not ask for proof of insurance.

If the driver is NOT the owner, the owner must give the driver written permission in Spanish with the following information:

I, (the owner), give permission to (the driver) to drive the vehicle described here:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Year of the vehicle
  • Color
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
to the interior of Mexico.

(Signature of Owner)

If the vehicle belongs to the church, the same letter needs to be written but on church letterhead.

Please remember, the permission letter MUST be in Spanish.

The Project Leader will help you with the paperwork at the border. If you would like to purchase car insurance for Mexico, you may call Sanborn's Insurance at 800/258-1656 or 956/546-6644.

2. Is there an entrance or exit tax for Mexico?
For the border trips such as Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana and Juarez there is NO fee.
For Mexico Interior locations there is a $20.00 per person fee going in. Your group is responsible for this; it is not included in the cost of an AIM project.
***Toll costs for Saltillo projects are $100 round trip. There are additional costs for crossing bridges, and your group will be responsible for these costs.

3. Do we need a tourist visa?
For the border trips, no.
For Mexico interior locations, in order to receive your visa EVERYONE needs a photo I.D. (driver's license, school I.D., etc.) and proof of citizenship (voter's registration card, notarized birth certificate or passport).  For those under 18 years old, they will need written permission by BOTH parents to go to the interior of Mexico. AIM will send you a form for the parents to fill out. Your Project Leader will assist you with the paperwork at the border.
